The topic for today is Blog, Blogger and Blogging. if you are with me then lets get started, first of all lets define some basic terms you need to know.
What is a blog ( origin of the word) ?
According to wikipedia "A blog is a truncation of the expression "weblog", it is a discussion or informational website published on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete, often informal diary-style text entries ("posts"). Posts are typically displayed in reverse chronological order, so that the most recent post appears first, at the top of the web page. Until 2009, blogs were usually the work of a single individual, occasionally of a small group, and often covered a single subject or topic ( niche ).
In the 2010s, "multi-author blogs" (MABs) have developed, with posts written by large numbers of authors and sometimes professionally edited."
The term "weblog" was coined by Jorn Barger on 17 December 1997. The short form, "blog", was coined by Peter Merholz, who jokingly broke the word weblog into the phrase we blog in the sidebar of his blog Peterme.com in April or May Shortly thereafter, Evan Williams at Pyra Labs used "blog" as both a noun and verb ("to blog", meaning "to edit one's weblog or to post to one's weblog") and devised the term "blogger" in connection with Pyra Labs' Blogger product, leading to the popularization of the terms
Types of blog
There are basically four types of blog one can venture into, they are :
1. Personal blogs ;
The personal blog is an ongoing online diary or commentary written by an individual, rather than a corporation or organization. While the vast majority of personal blogs attract very few readers, other than the blogger's immediate family and friends. this type of blog is common in Nigeria, and the sole aim it primarily to pass information and not to make money out of it.
2. Collaborative blogs or group blogs ;
A type of weblog in which posts are written and published by more than one author (multi- author). The majority of high-profile collaborative blogs are based around a single uniting theme, such as politics, technology,News, Sports or advocacy.
3. Corporate and organizational blogs ;
A blog can be private, as in most cases, or it can be for business or not-for-profit organization or government purposes. Blogs used internally, and only available to employees via an Intranet are called corporate blogs. examples are blogs owned by an online shopping company.
4. Aggregated blogs ;
Individuals or organization may aggregate selected feeds on specific topic called a niche, product or service and provide combined view for its readers.
What is Microblogging ?
Microblogging is the practice of posting small pieces of digital content—which could be text, pictures, links, short videos, or other media—on the Internet. Microblogging offers a portable communication mode that feels organic and spontaneous to many users.
What is Blogosphere ?
The collective community of all blogs and blog authors, particularly notable and widely read blogs, is known as the blogosphere. Since all blogs are on the internet by definition, they may be seen as interconnected and socially networked, through blogrolls, comments, linkbacks (refbacks, trackbacks or pingbacks), and backlinks.
Who is a Blogger ?
A blogger is someone who blogs, or writes content for a blog. A pro blogger is one who take blogging as a profession,that is a full time job, while a part-time blogger,takes blogging as a recreation time activity, though both of them can earn from it and makes a living out of it.
What is blogging ?
Blogging is the act of writing a post for a blog, in modern times, a blogger must not necessary own a blog, in fact, with the definition of micro blogging, you will find out that everybody is a blogger.
History of blogging in Nigeria
Blogging in Nigeria don't have any clear origin per say, but it was gathered by BlogNigeria Researchers that blogs were ceated in nigeria as far back as the early 20th century, but it was widely accepted as a profession by Nigerians about a decade ago.
As At today, about 200 blogs are created in Nigeria daily ( blognigeria statistics), though most of them are personal and micro blogs.
Does Blogging Pay ?
I don't know what to say, this is the reason why 70% of today bloggers venture into blogging, and maybe the reason why you are probably, patiently reading this right now, the money, but do you know that there are many charity blogs out there on the net.
What's my idea ?, if you concentrate on the money without developing yourself, you will end up like many failed blogs in Nigeria !!!.
Nevertheless, yes, blogging pays, even here in Nigeria, and not only does it pay but pays heavily, like blood money some will say, of course i don't need to give you the list of successful bloggers in Nigeria, because the list will be quit long.
